Porangahau Beach

Porangahau is a long beach of golden brown sand, which is hard packed and easy to walk on (there are also likely to be quad bikes on the beach). The sandspit is about 4 km long. Starting from the carpark and toilets at the end of Beach Road, you can walk north along the sand spit as short or far as you want.

There are several entrances through the sand dunes (which are fenced off for protection) as shown on the map: Makaramu Crescent, and through the forest off Te Paerahi Rd.

Getting there
The best road to Porangahau is to take Porangahau Road south out of Waipukurau. Turn left in to the small settlement of Porangahau after about 40 km (allow an hour to drive there from Waipukurau). Drive through Porangahau past the store and turn right on to Beach Road. Follow the road round and right over the bridge to Porangahau Beach.
