From the growing resort town of Wanaka, this route heads northwest up the valley of the Matukituki River to give access to Mt Aspiring National Park and the glaciers on the western and southern slopes of the 3027m peak after which it is named. Along the way are views of Lake Wanaka, the wide Matukituki, glaciers, and numerous peaks. The route is suitable for most vehicles but you must watch the weather: heavy rain in the area can cause even small side streams to rise quickly and become impassable.
